Causes of the Month
February is "American Heart Month."
Joan Hornig designs are meant to make women feel as unique and beautiful as the jewelry they are wearing. The added beauty of a Joan Hornig piece is that it reminds women that fashion can make a difference, not just a statement. Now more than ever is the time for making that difference.
February is "American Heart Month"—a stark reminder that heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women. This is why we have proudly supported the tireless work of the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org) as well as their Go Red for Women campaign, which celebrates the energy, passion and power of women when they band together to wipe out heart disease. The Texas Heart Institute
(www.TexasHeartInstitute.org) and The Heart of DiscoverySM initiative to prevent and treat cardiovascular illnesses have also received our support. Through the donations that our clients make possible, Joan Hornig continues to be part of the movement to combat heart disease.
We are also committed to supporting arts and cultural organizations whose work enriches all of our lives. In honor of Black History Month, we salute the following organizations that have received donations from the Joan Hornig Foundation. They continue to promote America's rich artistic and cultural legacy around the world.
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (www.alvinailey.org) promotes the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of American modern dance.
The Apollo Theater Foundation (www.apollotheatre.org) develops world-class live performances and education programs that honor and advance the contributions of African-American artists.
Jewelry Trend
Follow Your Heart
Go Red For Women. It's not only a slogan from the American Heart Association but timely advice in selecting jewelry to celebrate American Heart Month and Valentine's Day. This month we highlight the elegant Diamond Together Forevers earrings made with Red Coral and 18K Gold. For a dramatic hint of red, there's the Three-Strand Onyx Petals with White Coral, Red Coral and Tourmalated Quartz.
However you choose to accessorize this month, follow your heart.

Giving and Gratitude
Katie Couric highlighted our philanthropic work in her piece "Gifts that Give" on the CBS Evening News and in her blog. We are very grateful for her acknowledgement and hope her efforts inspire others to give gifts that give. Read more...
We also extend our appreciation to Bergdorf Goodman for promoting the "Philanthropy is Beautiful" message in their store window over the holidays. The limited-edition Snowflakes Earrings benefited the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
And finally, a special thank you to Maria Cuomo Cole and Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark, for their work with HELP USA (www.helpusa.org
). Since 1986, HELP USA has served more than 170,000 homeless men, women and children by providing housing, job training, mentoring and social services. HELP USA recently honored Joan at their Domestic Violence Scholarship Awards reception for her various efforts to combat violence against women. Philanthropy Is...
"Philanthropy is having an open heart. I feel enormous satisfaction in improving someone's quality of life simply by sharing inspiration and information."
—Dr. Terri Kennedy, National Spokesperson for the American Heart Association and President of Power Living Enterprises, Inc.
A Message From Joan
The Perfect Storm
We are experiencing a time of great need. Many organizations are caught in the perfect storm of job losses, limited credit and dwindling financial assets. These include charities that support families at risk, foundations that fund research to find cures for debilitating illnesses and arts organizations enriching our lives.
Now, more than ever, philanthropy is necessary. Sympathy and expressions of concern for those struggling are kind. But our actions are more powerful. In our efforts to help charities negatively impacted by the current economic crisis or by the Bernie Maddoff scandal, we urge our community to continue its honorable tradition of generosity and kindness.
