Joan's Personal Message
At Joan Hornig Jewelry, we celebrate what is fundamentally beautiful—the spirit within us to look out for one another, to help, and to give. We also take inspiration from the natural beauty of the environment. Our pieces often reflect the earth's raw and imperfect splendor. Through a stone's flaws, scars, and ridges, you see nature at its purest. This is why many of our pieces are marked with an earthiness like the unpolished edges of our Branch Cuff or the sculptural silhouette of the Blue Matte Lapis Petal Necklace pictured above. This month, as we celebrate Earth Day, let us honor the natural beauty around and within us.
Warmest Regards,

Cause of the Month
For the last 47 years, Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, has become an important reminder of our need to be ever more environmentally conscious. Over a dozen environmental organizations, ranging from national groups like the Sierra Club to community-based initiatives like Trees for Houston, have received donations from the Joan B. Hornig Foundation on behalf of our generous clients. We hope you continue the same spirit of giving back to our environment and find your own ways to preserve the natural resources that belong to us all—not just this month, but always.
Jewelry Trend
Pearls are desirable this spring precisely because they evoke both timelessness and new beginnings. One of the most beautiful qualities about pearls is how they are made. It is an irritant within the oyster that creates a pearl—a creation that proves what bothers us can also inspire us.
The natural brown, gold, and pink tones shimmering in the multi-strand Keshi Pearl Necklace offer both traditional glamour and innovative style. Paired with a spring wardrobe of neutral palettes, the Keshi Pearl Necklace adds an unmistakable "wow" factor, yet still makes a statement of classic elegance.
A wonderful compliment to the elegance of the Keshi Pearl Necklace is the Freshwater Pearl Coin Earrings with peridot and 18k green gold. The nacre adds to its unique character and enhances the pink and golden hues even more. Worn with a chic spring or summer outfit, the combination of gold, peridot and the warm neutral tones of the pearls make these earrings a versatile accessory.
Giving and Gratitude
We extend our gratitude to Saks 5th Avenue New Orleans for their work in helping the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) raise money through Art in Bloom in March. We were pleased to participate in this event where charitable giving truly blossoms. After Hurricane Katrina, Saks 5th Avenue helped put the town's retail business back on its feet. Together with the people of New Orleans, Saks continues to be a significant part of this thriving community.
Joan Hornig's Fleur-de-lis collection is now featured in NOMA's museum shop. The collection captures the essence of the fleur-de-lis (iris flower)—the official symbol of the state of Louisiana and now a poignant reminder to support New Orleans' recovery. Nothing could be more fitting for the city of New Orleans than the iris, a flower that stands tall and straight and opens up to welcome the sun. Joan Hornig Jewelry is donating all profits from the sales of the collection to NOMA.
Gratitude begins at home. This month, as we celebrate Earth Day, Joan salutes her husband, George Hornig, for his lifestyle of giving. As Chair of the Board of Directors of Riverkeeper, George will be honored this month for his commitment to protecting New York City's quality of water, along with Hon. Michael R. Bloomberg and Pete Seeger. George's commitment to his community also extends to rebuilding New York City playgrounds and volunteering with Credit Suisse staff at local homeless shelters each month.
Philanthropy Is...
"My definition of philanthropy is environmentally inspired. My goal as I go through life is to put back more than I take out. So many people in our country and around the world face issues with the availability and quality of the water in their communities—it's a precious resource that no one should take for granted. My work with Riverkeeper is about protecting this most basic yet essential resource. Without clean water, the quality of life in New York would be fundamentally diminished."
—George Hornig, Chair of the Board of Directors, Riverkeeper
Riverkeeper works to protect the ecological integrity of the Hudson River and its tributaries, and to safeguard the drinking water supply of New York City and the lower Hudson Valley.
Making A Difference
"The principle behind your philanthropic jewelry is utterly admirable—and the pieces themselves divine. Your generosity, this year especially, is helping us make a great impact on our city when it needs us most. Let us not let it go back to what it was in the 1970s and 1980s."
—New York Restoration Project (NYRP)
New York Restoration Project (NYRP) carries out founder Bette Midler's dream of a cleaner, more beautiful New York. NYRP restores, develops, and revitalizes underserved parks, community gardens, and open space in New York City.
